Bargrave Collection

Friday 13th February 2009

Cressida Williams, the Cathedral Archivist, will begin with an illustrated presentation on the Bargrave Collection. This will look at John Bargrave himself, will provide an overview of the objects he collected, and will focus on individual items.

There will then be an opportunity to view the cabinets and their contents – which range from Native American porcupine-quill jewellery to the preserved finger of a Frenchman!

In the Audio Visual Theatre at the International Study Centre at 2pm followed by a visit to the Archives to see the collection.

From Church to Church

Thursday 26th March

This day-trip to Bruges in Belgium will take us on a walking tour to some 30 religious buildings testifying to Bruges’ religious character, from the large classics such as Saint Saviour’s Cathedral to other less well-known places.

After a lovely lunch tasting local specialities we will visit the Hospital museum where nuns and monks cared for pilgrims, travellers and the sick over eight centuries and now most famous for its collection of Memlings.

There will be some free time at the end of the day to visit other museums at your leisure, go shopping or just relax before we make our way to the Channel Tunnel for our return journey home.
